Over the past few weeks I have been experimenting with embroidery techniques. It has been years since I have done any needlework – and then it was only cross stitch and tapestry – but I was inspired by some books, a couple that I bought (Doodle Stitching: Embroidery & Beyond by Aimee Ray and freehand machine embroidery by Poppy Treffry) and one that, coincidentally, my mum got me (all sewn up by Chloe Owens). They give really good examples of modern and contemporary styles of machine and hand embroidery – I previously always thought of hand embroidery as really dated and old-fashioned. I have been interested in freehand machine embroidery for a while but never properly mastered it, Poppy’s book has changed that – her tips are amazing! I have also been researching on the internet and another couple of designers have caught my eye: Kirsty Neale and Lucky Jackson. Kirsty Neale has a book out soon and I can’t wait to get a copy.
Some of my designs still have to stay a secret for a little while longer but here is a peek at an embroidery that I finished yesterday. I have taken my favourite photograph (to date) of my cat and transformed it to fit in a hoop – I hope you like it!
